Cover Reveal: Breaking Waves by Danielle Sibarium

I recently read and loved Danielle Sibarium's first novel, For Always, so I'm very excited to be participating in the cover reveal for her newest release, Breaking Waves, coming January 10th 2013.  Breaking Waves is the sequel to Heart Waves, which I haven't read, but I've heard it has a bit of a Romeo and Juliet theme to it so I need to read it soon!  If you've seen the cover for Heart Waves, you'll recognize the repeating motifs and style in the beautiful cover below:

I really love abstract covers because they allow me to come up with my own image of the main characters, and I particularly like the sense of movement this cover creates!  Now I'm sure you're wondering what Breaking Waves is about, so here you go...

From the moment they met, Jenna knew Reece would break her heart, but she never dreamed it would happen like this. Jenna is left shattered and broken. When life becomes too painful to deal with and she feels completely alone, there’s only one person to help her pick up the pieces and move on. The one person she doesn’t want to turn to. The one person she promised to stay away from. Tyler.

Can Jenna put aside everything she knows about him and let Tyler help heal her broken heart?

To learn more about Danielle and all of her books, visit her at her website, goodreads page, or the Heart Waves facebook page.  And of course you (and I!) need to read Heart Waves before Breaking Waves is released, so you can buy it from Barnes & Noble here or Amazon here.

Finally I want to thank Danielle for inviting me to take part in her cover reveal, and congratulate her on her upcoming release!

A Little Challenge, Part 2

Last week, I told you about four references to the original Romeo and Juliet in my modern version, Defy the Stars.  As promised, today I’m letting you know how such random things as sycamore trees and a serpent’s heart relate to Shakespeare’s play!

   1. The stoners’ tree where Reed and his buddies hang out is a SYCAMORE…

…and in the original play, Romeo mopes under a sycamore tree while pining over his pre-Juliet love, Rosaline.  This is from the first scene in the play:
Lady Montague.
O, where is Romeo?--saw you him to-day?--  Right glad I am he was not at this fray.
Madam, an hour before the worshipp'd sun
Peer'd forth the golden window of the east,
A troubled mind drave me to walk abroad;
Where,--underneath the grove of sycamore
That westward rooteth from the city's side,--
So early walking did I see your son…

Benvolio.

2.       The club where Julia and Reed hang out is called SERPENT’S HEART…
…and in Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet finds out Romeo killed Tybalt, she says,
“O serpent heart, hid with a flowering face!”
When I read that line, it struck me as the perfect name for a goth-ish, somewhat pretentious club, so I decided to use it!

3.       Reed’s brother is named CARY…
One reviewer saw Cary as a combination of Tybalt and Mercutio, which is super cool, but I actually based him off a different character who plays a small but essential role in Romeo and Juliet: the apothecary.  When I read Shakespeare’s incredibly creepy descriptions of the apothecary, I realized this character—who sells illegal poison in addition to medicine—has a lot in common with a modern drug dealer:

I do remember an apothecary…
…Meager were his looks;
Sharp misery had worn him to the bones…
…and about his shelves
A beggarly account of empty boxes,
Green earthen pots, bladders, and musty seeds,
Remnants of packthread, and old cakes of roses,
Were thinly scatter’d to make up a show.
Noting this penury, to myself I said—
An if a man did need a poison now,
Whose sale is present death in Mantua,
Here lives a caitiff wretch would sell it him.

4.       At the beginning of the book, Julia has her name yelled at her several times…and she even wonders why people keep “calling her.”

…when I think of Juliet in the play, one of the first things that comes to my mind is her nurse calling her over and over at the top of her lungs!  In fact, Juliet’s first line in the play is,
“How now, who calls?” in response to her nurse.
So as my little nod to the play, Julia in Defy the Stars gets repeatedly “called” by her teacher, friend, and mother at the beginning of my book!

Hope you found these tidbits interesting, and yes, there are others to find in my book…thanks for reading!

Cover Reveal: Exhale by Jennifer Snyder

I recently read and really enjoyed Jennifer Snyder's two contemporary YAs, The Unloved and Shattered Soul, so I'm very excited to be taking part of the cover reveal for her newest release, Exhale.  Exhale is coming out on Dec. 10th, 2012, and the beautiful cover was designed by Once Upon a Time Covers.  Now here's the pretty...

About the book:

Inhaling in life is easy. It’s the exhaling—the letting go— that’s the hard part.

Katie Elliot has always known the Conner twins. For years she secretly pined after one, while playfully averting the advances of the other.  Once upon a time, she was fine with that. Then came the moment when her twin of preference kissed her and changed everything.

As if realizing love can be complex—even when it’s reciprocated—isn’t hard enough, tragedy strikes, tearing Katie and the boy she’s always desired apart.  Finding herself torn between love and guilt, Katie must learn when it’s acceptable to let go—when it’s finally okay to exhale.

Add Exhale to Goodreads here:

And best of all, Jennifer Snyder is generously giving away a copy!  You can enter through Rafflecopter below:

Indie Giving Blogfest

I am so excited to be participating in the Indie-Giving Blogfest organized by the Indelibles, because I’ve been looking for the perfect opportunity to say how very thankful I am that I made the decision to go indie and become a part of the incredible online reading and writing community!  Going indie forced me to contact and interact with other indie authors, bloggers, and readers MUCH more than I would have otherwise.  It’s scary to ask someone to read your book, knowing they might hate it…but I’ve made so many new connections, online friendships, and found so many new opportunities as a result.  (Blog tour, for one!)  I’m so excited by the way indie authors are revolutionizing the publishing industry, especially in the YA/NA arena, and I’m even more excited to be a part of it!  I’m also very thankful to have an agent who gave me the confidence to put my book out there and supported my decision to self-publish it.  I still plan to pursue traditional publishing for at least some of my work in the future, but I will always be incredibly proud to call myself an indie author!

As for the giveaway…since there are so many exciting indie books out there, I’m giving away up to 15.00 worth of indie ebooks for kindle through amazon.  The winner will choose their books up to 15.00, email me a list, and I will gift them through amazon!  And if you need recommendations, I have a ton…too many to list here, in fact!

A Little Challenge...

As you probably know, Defy the Stars is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, and as a lifetime lover of retellings (especially retold fairy tales, btw!), I like to mix in little winks and nods to the original.  The only reason I was able to do this, of course, was because I reread Romeo and Juliet and took notes just before writing my modern version.  So I don’t expect readers to pick up on these little things…  But in case you’re curious, here are four Romeo and Juliet tidbits I worked into my novel.  No spoilers, so don’t be afraid to keep reading even if you haven’t read the book.

The catch is…I’m not going to tell you HOW these four elements relate to the original Romeo and Juliet until next Wednesday, in the follow-up to this post.  So if anyone’s so inclined, you can go back to the original play (or watch the movie!) and try to figure out what these refer to.  Have fun!

1.
The stoners’ tree where Reed and his buddies hang out is a SYCAMORE…

2.       The club where Julia and Reed hang out is called SERPENT’S HEART…

(This picture is of a statue called Serpent’s Heart in World of Warcraft, and has nothing to do with my book or R&J!)

3.       Reed’s brother is named CARY…

(This picture actually is a clue!)

4.       At the beginning of the book, Julia has her named yelled at her several times…and she even wonders why people keep “calling her.”

(Okay, those two are clues too!)

Mission Accomplished!

Well, the DEFY THE STARS blog tour is over, and I could not be more pleased and overwhelmed with its success!  I have to thank everyone who read guest posts and reviews, entered the giveaways, followed me on twitter or my blog, added Defy the Stars to goodreads, and of course bought it!  I also have to thank all the amazing bloggers who participated in the tour, and especially Nereyda Gonzalez, who organized the tour for YA Bound.  She did an amazing job, and if you're an author looking to organize a blog tour, I highly recommend her!

What's even cooler is that I never intended to have a blog tour for Defy the Stars--Nereyda actually approached me with the idea, and I'm so very glad she did!  Overall, am I happy about last week?  In the words of Emma Watson, who would play Julia in my dream version of Defy the Stars,

UH...YEAH!!!

Now to all my new blog followers, thank you so much and I hope you'll stick around--I'll try to have some interesting stuff for you!  I have a 2-part post planned beginning next Wednesday, which will be especially interesting to anyone who has read or plans to read Defy the Stars (no spoiler, I promise!).

I will also be participating in the Indie Giving Blogfest beginning November 18th, so keep an eye out for that and there may be a prize or too!

Again, thanks everyone!

Blog Tour: Day 2

And here are the links to day 2 of the Defy the Stars blog tour!  I have to tell you, sometimes I feel like an evil author toying with readers' emotions when I read these reviews!  (I'm not, really--I just let the story take me where it wants to go.)  Anyway, I am again blown away by the response to my little book, and I hope you'll check all the posts out.

Also, Defy the Stars made it to #6 in YA music bestsellers on amazon, and I'd love to get it even higher!  The book is .99 this week only--this is the last chance to get it under 2.99 all year, so grab it, tell your friends, etc., etc.

And THANK YOU!

Now in case any of you are wondering about the QUERY LETTER CRITIQUE portion of my giveaway...  I've queried a few manuscripts, and altogether I've received over 20 manuscript requests and 5 offers of representation.  So I'd love to help another aspiring writer out by offering a query letter critique!  (For those of you who aren't writers, a query letter is a request for agents to look at your manuscript and possibly offer representation--and it's also a source of considerable angst!)

Thanks so much, everyone!
