Release Day Launch: No Turning Back by Casey Peeler

Today is the official release day for Casey Peeler's debut novel, No Turning Back.  I had the chance to read an advance copy of this one, and it was great!  You can read my review below, and there's also a GIVEAWAY to celebrate the release.

After getting involved with Dylan, the bad boy of the Dixon High Swim team, Charley decides to stay close to home for college. It’s just safer that way. Later, she realizes it’s a mistake, just like dating Dylan. She decides to put the past behind her and leave the small hick town of Grassy Pond. There is only one problem; she makes this decision three weeks before the fall semester begins.

Charley packs up her Honda and heads to Southern College. On the morning she’s about to leave, Cash walks back into her life. He has been her best friend since they were four and is the only one who knows the REAL Charley. She leaves her farm in Grassy Pond with all kinds of “what if” questions.

Charley decides to live her college career to the fullest. She finds a great group of friends, joins the swim team, and meets a guy named Joe. He’s got eyes that make ya wanna melt!

At college, she encounters a new problem. Charley has been away from home for only forty-eight hours before she breaks the two promises she made to herself. Will she be able to overcome her past? Find new love? What will happen with Cash now that he is back in her life? Will she find what she is wanting in Jackalope Joe? How will her first semester of college end? Joe, Cash, or alone?

Add No Turning Back on Goodreads, and purchase on Amazon and Smashwords.

MY REVIEW

While No Turning Back does contain some dramatic content and themes, what I enjoyed most about this story was how refreshingly normal and down-to-earth it was.  While so many new adult novels are full of extreme, melodramatic situations, No Turning Back is the simple, relatable story of a young woman leaving her home for the first time and trying to find herself and establish an identity of her own.  (Although don’t worry—there’s plenty of yummy guys and enough boy drama to satisfy all you romance-seekers!)

I absolutely loved the country setting and main character Charley’s country “voice” and obvious pride in her heritage.  It’s obvious the author has a deep knowledge of and love for country life, and she put it to good use in this book.  Another thing I loved—and which many new adult books, even those claiming to be about the “college experience,” tend to overlook—is how well the author captured the little nuances, both good and bad, about starting college for the first time.  Things like the awkwardness of meeting your roommate, the painful getting-to-know-you, orientation-type activities, and even things I’d completely forgotten about but that made me smile in recognition, like the stupidity of Freshman Seminar.  Here are a few of Charley’s thoughts that made me go, Yes, that was me!:

“I have never been one that likes to play the get-to-know-you icebreaker shit.”

and

“I have Freshman Seminar.  I mean do they really think we are that stupid?  We need a class on how to survive in college.  Ummm, no we don’t.”

The book was worth reading for those quotes alone!  Although Charley’s Freshman Seminar class does turn out to be different than she expected, and much cooler than mine was.

As the book goes on, I loved reading about Charley’s involvement in the college swim team, which also brought back memories for me since I had friends on the swim team in college.  I have no idea how they, or Charley, functioned with such intense early-morning practices!  I also enjoyed watching Charley reaching out and developing relationships with new people in college, while still remaining loyal to her friends and family at home.

No Turning Back does end with a bit of a shocker, although I had a feeling something along that line was coming…I am certainly eager to find out what happens next in Charley’s life.  I will definitely be picking up the next book, and I’m looking forward to more of Charley’s country charm!
